Studio Spotlight — Een kijkje in de werkplaatsen van moderne makers
Achter elke prachtige stoel schuilt een visie — en vaak een werkplaats vol gereedschap, houtstof en creatieve energie. In onze serie “Studio Spotlight” bezoekt Tim Designer de ateliers, studio’s en onafhankelijke ontwerpers die modern meubeldesign herdefiniëren, stuk voor stuk.
De designwereld draait tegenwoordig niet alleen om grote merken en glanzende catalogi. Meer dan ooit zien we invloed van kleine studio’s met een uitgesproken stijl en visie. Hier komen traditioneel vakmanschap en moderne esthetiek samen. Hier wordt geëxperimenteerd met materialen en worden grenzen verlegd.
We belichten studio’s wereldwijd — van minimalistische Japanse werkplaatsen tot Scandinavische collectieven en ontwerpers uit Brooklyn die gerecycled hout combineren met 3D-geprinte onderdelen. De diversiteit is enorm, maar het respect voor het proces is universeel.
In Londen zagen we hoe stoelen met de hand gevormd worden via stoomtechnieken. In Barcelona bezochten we een designer die restmateriaal uit brillenproductie — optisch acetaat — verwerkt in tafelbladen. In Los Angeles zagen we hoe oude meubelonderdelen getransformeerd worden tot modulaire planken.
Wij geloven dat de toekomst van design evenzeer draait om verhalen als om vormen. Studio Spotlights zijn dan ook méér dan een blik achter de schermen — ze zijn een eerbetoon aan intentie. Het zien van het maakproces vergroot je waardering voor het eindproduct en herinnert ons eraan dat goed design doordacht, langzaam en persoonlijk is.
In onze verhalen belichten we ook de filosofieën van ontwerpers. Sommigen streven naar zero waste, anderen focussen op lokaal materiaalgebruik of cultureel erfgoed. En steeds vaker zien we kruisbestuiving met brillenontwerp — denk aan transparantie, laminaatlagen en hergebruik van materialen.
Zoektermen als “onafhankelijke meubelontwerpers”, “ambachtelijke studio’s” of “slow design” groeien hard — en weerspiegelen een consument die op zoek is naar betekenis en authenticiteit. Ons doel is om die verhalen zichtbaar te maken en je te inspireren bewuster te wonen.
Dus de volgende keer dat je in een prachtige stoel zit, denk dan eens aan de studio waar hij vandaan kwam. Grote kans dat hij niet alleen gebouwd is — maar met zorg, verhaal en ziel is gemaakt.
